YouGov Behavioral - Viewership Trends by US Political Party
Leveraging YouGov Behavioral’s insights into media consumption, this report explores top-performing movies and TV shows across the Democratic, Republican and Independent parties.
Key Findings Include:
- Republican viewers skew toward action, heartland drama, and protector-led thrillers: Their strongest over-indexes cluster around neo-Westerns, tactical/crime thrillers, faith or values-adjacent programming and rural-set dramas, including Hillbilly Elegy (+11.7%), Spenser Confidential (+11.7%), The Chosen (+10.%) and The Night Agent (+10.5%).
- Democratic viewers over-index on socially aware comedy, prestige ensemble storytelling, and political/cultural satire: Their most defining titles include Queer Eye (+5.2%), Abbott Elementary (+5.0%), The Great British Baking Show (+4.7%), Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (+4.4%), and Fleabag (+4.1%), pointing to a stronger affinity for identity-forward, character-led and institutionally reflective content.
- Independent viewers stand out for genre eclecticism, sci-fi & fantasy, rich world-building, and irreverent animation: Their over-indexed list spans Twisted Metal (+3.3%), Ancient Apocalypse (+2.9%), Supernatural (+2.9%), King of the Hill (+2.7%) and Altered Carbon (+2.6%), suggesting a taste profile rooted in more expansive universes, cult titles, and offbeat genre fare than in overtly prestige or message-driven programming.
- Republicans appear the oldest of the three viewership audiences, while Independents skew youngest overall: Republicans have the largest 55+ share (30.5%), while Independents have the largest 25-34 segment (25.4%). Democrats skew female and relatively young as well, with 45.5% under 35.
