OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research organization behind ChatGPT, is gearing up for a blockbuster IPO (reportedly within the year). But what do Americans make of the company’s flagship LLM?

Data from YouGov AI Index allows us to explore public opinion of the brand among consumers who are aware of ChatGPT. It reveals that ChatGPT’s Impression scores, a measure of a brand’s general likability, are 12 points higher than those the average AI brand (22.4 vs. 10.4). vs. 10.4).

Anthropic’s Claude model is somewhat further behind with a score of 15.2.

The story is similar when we look at other metrics. Quality scores, a measure of accuracy, sit at 15.6 for ChatGPT among aware consumers; near ten points ahead of the average score of 5.9. Again, Gemini is slightly ahead (17.6), while Claude is somewhat further behind (10.0). 

But what about how each tool makes the user feel? We track this sentiment using our Value score, which tracks how AI tools make users work, think, and feel. Here, ChatGPT’s scores are more than double the average (19.1 vs. 7.4). It also outperforms every other model: Gemini’s scores are 17.4, while Claude’s are at 9.8.

As for the customer experience, ChatGPT’s Satisfaction scores are at 55.0. Here, it again outperforms the average (48.8), but falls a little short of Gemini (56.0), and 7.5 points short of Claude (62.5). When we look at Recommend scores, however, OpenAI’s model once again leads the pack: its score of 17.9 considerably outperforms the benchmark (3.2), and beats Gemini (15.8) by 2.1 points. Claude’s score of 10.5 is behind both.
