American public opinion now narrowly supports sending ground troops to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria and only 20% would rule it out as an option
On Monday the United States expanded its campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) when it began to launch airstrikes on the group's heartland in Syria. The Pentagon has warned that these airstrikes are just the beginning of a prolonged campaign against the group, which has siezed control of vast swathes of Syrian and Iraqi territory. So far the involvement of US troops on the ground is limited to training and advice for Iraqi and Kurdish forces battling the Islamic State, but the Army has announced that a divisional HQ will be deployed to Iraq to coordinate US action and potentially pave the way for fighting on the ground.
YouGov's latest research shows that Americans now narrowly support sending ground troops to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, with 45% in favor and 41% against. Republicans are most strongly in favor, with 63% saying that US troops should battle the Islamic State on the ground while 29% oppose sending troops. Democrats (39% to 45% against) and independents (40% to 43% against) narrowly oppose sending troops.

Support for sending ground troops to fight in Iraq and Syria grew most among Democrats, jumping 7% from 32% before the weekend to 39% after airstrikes were first launched in Syria. Support increased by 5% for both independents (35% to 40%) and Republicans (58% to 63%). Significantly, there was an 11% increase in the proportion of Democrats who 'strongly support' sending troops, up from 7% to 18%.

When people who do not currently support sending troops were asked whether the US should rule out sending troops or if it should be kept as an option, only 20% of Americans say that it should be ruled out. 22% of the public, and 41% of people who do not support sending troops, say that the option of a ground war should be kept open.

US airstrikes have not only been launched against the Islamic State. The US has, according to current reports, largely wiped out the leadership of a small group called 'Khorasan' which is a group made up of Al-Qaeda veterans which the US believes is focused on launching attacks on Western targets.
