Donald Trump's job approval falls to 33%

Only one-third (33%) of Americans strongly or somewhat approve of how Donald Trump is handling his job as president, according to the latest Economist / YouGov Poll. That's the smallest share to ever approve of Trump's job handling in any Economist / YouGov Poll across both of Trump's terms. Meanwhile 62% disapprove of Trump, the most to ever do so.

With 33% approval and 62% disapproval, Trump's net job approval is -29, also the lowest he has ever received. At this point in Trump's first term, he had a net approval of -10, while Joe Biden had a -17 net approval at this point in his term.

Trump's net job approval is the lowest he has ever received among multiple demographic groups, including women (-36), white Americans (-19), and college graduates (-42).

Almost all Democrats disapprove of Trump's job performance: 4% approve and 95% disapprove, for a net approval of -91. This near-unanimous disapproval from Democrats has been the case for most of Trump's second term.

Trump's job approval among Independents has been falling. Currently 18% of Independents approve of Trump's job performance and 71% disapprove, a net job approval of -53. That's down from 32% approval and 60% disapproval (-28 net) among Independents at the start of the year.

Trump has also been losing support from his Republican base. Among the roughly 60% of Republicans who are MAGA supporters, Trump's approval since the start of the year has remained relatively stable (moving to 92% from 94%) and the share who disapprove rose slightly to 8% from 4%. That's a change in net approval to +85 from +91.

The larger drop is among the roughly 30% of Republicans who say they're not MAGA supporters, who began Trump's second term almost universally approving of him (90% approve and 6% disapprove) but are now nearly evenly split (51% vs. 47%). A majority of that decline happened in 2025, but Trump's approval among non-MAGA Republicans is down from January 2026 (60% vs. 39%) as well.

Another sign of Trump's shrinking political base is that he has hit a new low for this term in the share of Americans who strongly approve of his job performance: 17%. Less than half (48%) of Republicans strongly approve of how Trump is handling his job, while almost all Democrats strongly disapprove of Trump's job performance (91%).

Democrats continue to lead in voter intent for the 2026 congressional elections, with 46% of registered voters saying they would vote for the Democratic Party candidate for U.S. Congress and 40% saying they would for the Republican candidate. That six-point Democratic lead is the largest on any Economist / YouGov poll since February.

Almost all Democrats say they'd vote for the Democratic congressional candidate (94%), while a slightly smaller share of Republicans say they'd vote for the Republican candidate (87%). More Independents say they'd vote for a Democrat than for a Republican (43% vs. 24%).

The minority of registered voters who strongly approve of Trump's job performance are all-in for Republicans in congressional races (95% would vote for a Republican vs. a statistically insignificant 1% who would vote for a Democrat). A slightly smaller share of those who strongly disapprove of Trump say they'd vote for a Democrat (82% vs. 3% who would vote for a Republican), but those who strongly disapprove of Trump represent half the population, compared to around 20% of the population who strongly approve.

Most registered voters who somewhat approve of Trump say they'd vote for the Republican congressional candidate (79%), but a larger share of them than those who strongly approve say they wouldn't vote, aren't sure how they'd vote, or would vote for a third-party candidate (17%). Voters who somewhat disapprove of Trump are more likely to say they would vote for a Republican than for a Democrat (46% vs. 30%), but a majority of this group (55%) are Republicans or Republican-leaning Independents.
