Most Americans disapprove of how Donald Trump is handling Iran, but there is no consensus over how to end the conflict, according to the latest Economist / YouGov Poll. 30% of U.S. adult citizens strongly or somewhat approve of how Trump is handling Iran, while 60% disapprove. The shares of Americans who hold these views have been steady in recent months.
Several questions about ways to end the war reveal a divided country. 35% of Americans say they would support making a deal with Iran that doesn't require Iran to give up its enriched uranium, while 31% would oppose it, with 35% unsure.
There's also limited support for the U.S. launching a much larger military campaign to force Iran to submit. Only 24% of Americans would support such a campaign, while 46% would not and 26% aren't sure. 75% of Democrats wouldn't support a bigger campaign, while 53% of Republicans would support it.
Trump said in a recent speech to the United Nations that his decision was whether to make a deal with Iran or to "annihilate the Islamic Republic." Few Americans have confidence Trump would be likely to accomplish either option. 32% think Trump would probably or definitely succeed in annihilating Iran, while 19% think he would likely succeed in making a deal with Iran. Republicans are almost twice as likely to think Trump would likely succeed at annihilating Iran (59%) than think he would be likely to successfully make a deal (34%).
