The World Health Organisation has named variants of COVID-19 after the Greek alphabet, to replace the current informal system of variants ending up being called after the country or area in which they were first discovered or evolved – so the variant commonly known as the “Indian variant” has been named “variant Delta”, and the variant commonly known as the “Kent variant” is named “variant Alpha”.
