The World Health Organisation has named variants of COVID‑19 after the Greek alphabet, to replace the current informal system of variants ending up being called after the country or area in which they were first discovered or evolved – so the variant commonly known as the “Indian variant” has been named “variant Delta”, and the variant commonly known as the “Kent variant” is named “variant Alpha”.
