Burger King has overtaken Wendy’s to become the second-largest burger chain in the U.S. by sales, according to recent reporting. The development follows a strong period for Burger King, with U.S. same-store sales growing 8.5% in the second quarter of 2026, while Wendy’s reported a 7% decline.

But has Burger King’s improved commercial performance been accompanied by stronger consumer perceptions?

YouGov BrandIndex data tracks how the two fast-food chains have performed over the past year, while additional analysis examines how perceptions differ among higher-spending fast-food diners. Overall brand health: Burger King gains on Wendy’s lead

Burger King has made considerable gains in its Index score over the past year. The metric, which combines six measures of brand health, rose from 15.7 in October 2025 to 22.0 by October 11, 2026 – an improvement of more than six points.

Wendy’s, meanwhile, has seen its Index score decline slightly over the same period, from 24.4 to 23.5.

As a result, the gap between the two brands has narrowed substantially. Wendy’s held an advantage of nearly nine points at the beginning of the period, but that lead has shrunk to fewer than two points.

Wendy’s retains an edge across the general population

Despite Burger King’s gains, Wendy’s continues to lead on several individual brand health measures among U.S. adults.

Wendy’s holds its clearest advantage on Quality, where its score stands at 25.2 compared with Burger King’s 18.3. It also leads on Impression (34.6 vs. 31.3) and Recommend (23.8 vs. 22.0).

However, the two brands are virtually tied on Value (21.6 for Wendy’s vs. 21.0 for Burger King) and Satisfaction (28.1 for both).

The results suggest that while Wendy’s retains a stronger overall reputation on several measures, Burger King is much closer on perceptions of value and customer satisfaction.

Burger King takes the lead among higher-spending fast-food diners

The picture changes when looking specifically at Americans who spend more than $50 per month on fast food.

Among this audience, Burger King leads Wendy’s on four of the five measures examined.

Burger King’s Satisfaction score stands at 38.8 compared with Wendy’s 33.9, while it also holds an advantage on Value (37.0 vs. 33.3).

The differences are smaller on Impression (46.7 vs. 45.0) and Recommend (37.6 vs. 36.1), but Burger King leads on both measures.

Quality is the only metric on which Wendy’s retains a marginal lead, scoring 35.2 compared with Burger King’s 34.8.

These results show that Burger King’s competitive position is stronger among higher-spending fast-food consumers than it is across the general population.

Burger King vs. Wendy’s: Which has the best tasting burgers?

YouGov CategoryView, which tracks consumer perceptions and behaviors across specific product and service categories, provides another perspective on the rivalry.

The data shows that Wendy’s and Burger King are closely matched when it comes to perceptions of great-tasting food. In 2026, 26% of consumers associated Wendy’s with great-tasting food, compared with 25% for Burger King.

However, a clearer difference emerges when consumers are asked which quick-service restaurant brand offers the best-tasting burger.

Burger King holds a sizeable lead on this measure, with 18% selecting the chain in Q3 2026, compared with just 8% choosing Wendy’s.

The gap has also widened over the past year. Burger King’s share rose from 14% in Q3 2025 to 18% in Q3 2026, while Wendy’s declined from 10% to 8% over the same period.

While the two chains are almost equally associated with great-tasting food overall, Burger King has a much stronger standing when consumers are asked to pick a single brand offering the best-tasting burgers.
