Nearly half of all Americans think that white people wearing black face for Halloween is acceptable, while nearly everyone thinks it's acceptable for white people to wear masks of Barack Obama.
With Halloween weekend approaching, many people don costumes that offend the senses, but there is a line between offending and offensive. Actress Julianne Hough was criticized this week for donning blackface in an attempt to portray the black character, "Crazy Eyes" from the hit show Orange is the New Black. Ms. Hough offered an apology for her controversial actions shortly after the photos of her in costume were published.
According to the lastest YouGov research, nearly half of all Americans (43%) think that it is acceptable for white people to wear black face make up for Halloween. There is a partisan divide however, with only 30% of Democrats saying it's acceptable as opposed to the majority (59%) of Republicans.

While many Americans think that it is acceptable, a large majority of black people (68%), think that it is unacceptable for a white person to wear black face make up- only 21% say it's acceptable.
When asked about dressing up as a racial or ethnic stereotype for Halloween, results were very similar, but people found it slightly less acceptable. More people found racial and ethnic stereotypes unacceptable than black face, while less people called it acceptable.

In terms of white people wearing a mask of Barack Obama for Halloween, a majority of Americans (72%) found it acceptable, and a majority of black people (52%) agree. The partisan divide is similar to the other two questions, with a smaller percentage of Democrats finding it acceptable than Republicans, but most agree.

Blackface started as make up used in racist minstrelsy, to portray simplified versions of black stereotypes, but now, many Americans say that black face is an acceptable form of dressing up.
