American wars post-9/11 have made more of an impact on Americans’ consciousness and lives than the tragedy itself. Only 6% know someone who died on September 11, 2001, either in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon or on United flight 93. 13% know someone killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Both these events touched groups of Americans about equally, with similar numbers across all groups saying they know people lost in each of these.
