Only 14% of Americans don't know a single gay person, and only 15% say that they don't feel comfortable around either gay men or gay women

The latest research from YouGov shows that, overall, only 14% of Americans don't know any people who identify as gay. There is a difference, however, as 21% of Americans don't know any gay men while 24% of Americans don't know any gay women. Most of the country know between 2 and 10 gay people, as the smallest groupings are people who only know one gay person and those who know more than ten gay people.

Asked who they feel more comfortable in the presence of, 60% of Americans say that they feel equally comfortable around both gay men and women. 8% say that they are more comfortable around gay men, while 9% are more comfortable around gay women. A significant part of these two latter groups are likely to be people of the opposite sex. 11% of women say that they're more comfortable around gay men than gay women, while 15% of men say that they're more comfortable around gay women than gay men. Only 15% of Americans say that they are not particularly comfortable around either group, with this response being most common among Republicans, 25% of whom chose 'neither' compared to only 9% of Democrats and 13% of Independents.
