Recent reports suggest that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is set to leave the club following the end of the current Premier League season. The Catalan, who has won 20 trophies during his tenure as manager, is expected to be replaced by ex-Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.
But do Manchester City fans think it’s the right time for Guardiola to go?
New data from YouGov Surveys reveals that two in five think the end of the current campaign is an appropriate moment for Pep to leave, while a third disagree (40% vs. 35%). When asked about support for Maresca’s appointment, Man City fans are more approving than not (40% vs. 9%), although a third do not support or oppose the move (35%).
The club’s supporters are also optimistic about their prospects for next season. Seven in ten (69%) are confident about winning the Premier League, while three-quarters say the same of the FA Cup and League Cup (74%). Over two in five believe Manchester City will win the Champions League (44%).
Man City fans are split on whether the club broke the Premier League’s financial rules
Guardiola’s potential departure is just one issue surrounding Manchester City. The Premier League’s 115 charges that the club broke its financial rules are another concern, and one that has been highlighted in some of the discussion around the former Barcelona coach’s rumoured departure.
Of the two issues, City supporters are more worried about the charges than their manager’s possible exit. YouGov data shows that while one in six are more concerned about Guardiola’s resignation, three in ten are more concerned that the club will be found to have broken the Premier League’s financial rules (31%).
YouGov Surveys data from 2023 found that three-quarters of football fans believed that the club was guilty. Opinion among Man City fans is more split. Two in five supporters believe it’s likely the club broke the rules, but a similar proportion believe it was unlikely (40%).
While the dispute with the league is yet to fully play out, Guardiola’s status among Man City fans seems reasonably assured. When we asked the club’s supporters to choose its best-ever manager from a list, three-quarters chose Guardiola (76%) over coaches such as Roberto Mancini (3%), Kevin Keegan (3%), Joe Mercer (2%), or Joe Royle (1%).
YouGov polled 510 adult Manchester City fans online on 19-20 May 2026. The survey was carried out through YouGov Surveys: Self-serve. Data is weighted by age, gender, education level, region, and social grade.
