Europeans in five major countries say it should
Last month, France’s foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot floated the idea that Canada could one day join the European Union, with Finnish president Alexander Stubb likewise suggesting to Canadian prime minister Mark Carney that he should “think about” joining the EU.
A YouGov Canada survey in 2025 found that 42% of Canadians supported joining the EU (more than the 33% opposed), and now our latest European Political Monthly survey finds that the feeling is reciprocated on the opposite side of the Atlantic.
A majority or plurality of adults in the five largest EU member states – France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain – say they would support admitting Canada to the European Union. Germans are the most likely to do so, at 55%, with 51% of Spaniards and 46% of Poles saying likewise.
While the French and Italians are the least likely to support Canadian membership of the EU, at 42% and 41% respectively, in both cases they substantially outweigh the number opposed (29% and 24%).
