Most Americans approve of the recent ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, according to the most recent Most Americans approve of the recent ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, according to the most recent Economist / YouGov Poll — conducted before that ceasefire began to come apart Monday. But support for the U.S. war with Iran overall has barely budged, and Donald Trump's social media posts about the war are unpopular — especially the ones threatening violence against Iran.
63% of Americans strongly approve of the two-week ceasefire with Iran, including 55% of Democrats, 56% of Independents, and 80% of Republicans.
Overall, 32% of U.S. adult citizens strongly or somewhat support the war with Iran, and 55% oppose it. The share of Americans who support the war has changed only a little over the past month. The shares of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans who say they support MAGA also have been mostly steady. Non-MAGA Republicans, however, have fluctuated considerably. Some of this could be normal statistical variation in a subgroup that's less than 10% of the U.S. adult citizen population, and some of it could represent changing views among a group that's sympathetic to Trump but doesn't identify with his political movement.
The Economist and YouGov showed Americans six posts Trump made about the war on his social media site, Truth Social. For each of the six, more Americans disapprove of the statement than approve of it.
The least-unpopular Trump post was a March 6 post in which he declared that, "There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER," but that after that surrender, the U.S. would "work tirelessly to bring Iran back from the brink of destruction, making it economically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before." 33% of Americans approve of that statement and 47% disapprove.
The most unpopular statement was an April 5 post in which he said, "Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah." Only 22% of Americans approve of that statement, and 59% disapprove.
MAGA Republicans are more likely to approve of each of the six posts than are non-MAGA Republicans. Both groups are less likely to support Trump's more bellicose posts than the less violent ones.
For example, 81% of MAGA Republicans approve of the post demanding "unconditional surrender," and only 6% disapprove. In contrast, the post threatening "Power Plant Day" has approval from 66% of MAGA Republicans while 18% disapprove.
