At any time, the world faces a number of potential major causes of disruption, but which do people see as the biggest threats?

What issues do people see as the biggest global threats?

Asked to pick up to three answers, climate change performed consistently highly, with no fewer than 27% picking it in any country. French people in particular are likely to have said climate change, at 48%, far ahead of any other country, or indeed any other answer in France.

Climate change was also the first place answer, or within the margin of error of being so, in the UK, Australia, Canada and Germany, as well as coming second in the US and third in Poland.

Poles stand out for being the most likely to say that “military attack from hostile states” is one of the biggest threats to global peace at the current time, at 43% - hardly surprising, given their proximity to Ukraine. For likely similar reasons, Germans are also more likely than other nations to say so, at 35%, also putting it within the margin of error of their top answer. In the UK, US, Australia, Canada and France, this figure stands at 13-23%.

For their part, Americans are more likely to say political extremism is a major global threat, at 39%, compared to 14-29% elsewhere.

Mass migration is also commonly cited in several countries as a top issue, particularly in Germany (where it is narrowly the top answer, at 36%) as well as Poland (33%) and the UK (32%).

Which countries are seen as the biggest threats to global peace?

For Poles, the most common answer is clearly Russia, with 59% seeing the country as the biggest threat to global peace. Germans likewise tend to name Russia as the greatest threat, at 42%, alongside 39% of Britons and 33% of the French.

For Canadians and Australians, it is the USA that they consider to be the most likely to threaten peace and stability in the world, at 37% and 30% respectively. Among other countries, between 11% and 25% also name the USA, including 15% among Americans.

In the US itself, there is no consensus. The most common answer is Iran, at 21%, but 11-16% likewise like Russia, China, Israel and the US itself as the biggest threat.
