Shopping days, food & beverages, channels
Tracking daily shopping activity across the week shows a clear weekend preference among Ukrainian consumers, with Saturday emerging as the busiest shopping day overall at 16%, followed closely by Sunday at 15%. The weekday pattern remains relatively consistent, with activity hovering between 13-15%, though Monday shows the lowest engagement at 13%.
Yet the patterns vary across channels. The hypermarkets and cash-and-carry sector demonstrate the most dramatic weekend spike, jumping from 11-13% during weekdays to a peak of 19% on Saturday, clearly reflecting consumers consolidating their bulk shopping and major grocery purchases into weekend trips.
Street markets and traditional open-air trading show remarkable performance 18% on Sunday — their highest point of the week. This indicates these venues remain popular weekend destinations, possibly combining shopping with social and leisure activities. Meanwhile, traditional brick-and-mortar stores maintain the most consistent daily pattern, varying only slightly from 13-15% throughout the week, suggesting a reliable customer base that shops according to need rather than scheduling around weekends.
Online shopping peaks midweek, with Wednesday hitting 17%, and merely 11% on Sunday. This inverse pattern shows consumers combining weekday online purchases, while dedicating their weekend hours to in-person shopping experiences.
